Laboratories

The Department of Civil Engineering has the following EIGHT (06) laboratories and ONE (01) Drawing Hall equipped with the modern and state-of-are equipment that are capable to fulfil the academic requirements of the practical work at the undergraduate level as well as to undertake the research and commercial testing activities. The adequate, qualified and experienced technical in-charges/staff are available to supervise laboratory-related experiments and tutorials as well as to demonstrate the experimental procedures and performances of the prescribed experiments.

Material Testing Laboratory

The Material Testing Laboratory serves as a pivotal hub for evaluating and analysing the physical and mechanical properties of construction materials. It stands as an essential facility for students, researchers, and professionals in the field. This laboratory is equipped with state-of-the-art instruments and apparatus designed to conduct a wide array of tests on materials such as concrete, asphalt, steel, soil, aggregates, and more. These tests play a crucial role in ensuring the quality, durability, and safety of structures, infrastructure, and building materials. The laboratory not only facilitates practical learning experiences for students but also supports innovative research initiatives, enabling the development of robust, sustainable, and resilient construction materials for the ever-evolving demands of the civil engineering industry.

  • Aggregate testing (specific gravity, absorption, sieve analysis, fineness modulus, flakiness index, elongation index, soundness, and unit weight)
  • Cement testing (consistency, setting time, expansion, mortar strength, flexural strength, and drying shrinkage)
  • Concrete testing (compressive strength of cubes, cylinders, cores, pavers, masonry blocks, and large specimens)
  • Concrete mix design and quality control evaluation
  • Non-destructive concrete testing including ultrasonic pulse velocity measurements
  • Steel testing including tensile strength, proof stress, modulus of elasticity, compression, shear, impact, bend, and re-bend tests

Soil Mechanics and Transportation Laboratory

The Soil Mechanics and Transportation Laboratory integrates the study of geotechnical and transportation engineering, providing students with practical exposure to the analysis and testing of soils, aggregates, bituminous materials, and pavement construction materials. The laboratory is equipped to perform a wide range of tests related to soil classification, compaction, permeability, shear strength, bearing capacity, asphalt properties, and pavement materials. Through hands-on experimentation, students develop the technical skills required for foundation engineering, highway design, pavement evaluation, and transportation infrastructure development. Environmental & Chemistry Laboratory

The Environmental and Chemistry Laboratories are state-of-the-art research and educational facilities dedicated to advancing knowledge in the fields of chemistry and environmental science. These well-equipped labs provide an invaluable resource for students, researchers, and professionals seeking to explore the intricate intersections between chemistry, environmental analysis, and civil engineering.
In the Chemistry Lab, students have access to essential tools such as pH meters, spectrophotometers, flame photometers, drying ovens, and triple beam balances.
The Environmental Lab is specifically tailored for research and analysis related to environmental science and quality assessment. Fluid Mechanics and Hydraulics Laboratory

The Fluid Mechanics Laboratory is a state-of-the-art facility equipped with a range of specialized apparatus and equipment to support research and practical experimentation in the field of fluid mechanics and hydraulic engineering. This laboratory offers students and researchers the opportunity to explore various fluid dynamics principles and phenomena, such as Bernoulli's principle, water hammer, losses in pipes and bends, open channel flow, and the impact of jet, among others. It houses essential equipment like the Hydraulic Bench and Osborne Reynolds Apparatus to facilitate hands-on learning and investigation of fluid properties and behaviours. Surveying and Engineering Mechanics Laboratory

The Surveying and Engineering Mechanics Laboratory provides students with practical training in land surveying and engineering mechanics. Equipped with modern surveying instruments and experimental apparatus, the laboratory enables students to develop skills in measurement, mapping, levelling, structural behaviour, force systems and motion analysis. Computer Laboratory

The Computer Laboratory is equipped with modern high-performance computer systems and specialized engineering software required for academic, research, and design activities. Students have access to industry-standard applications such as AutoCAD, Revit, ETABS, MATLAB, Python, and other engineering software used in professional practice.
